Summary

Develops, oversees, and implements various ministries of the congregation, including:

  • Baptism
  • Learning Hour
  • Catechetical Instruction
  • Youth Ministry
  • Faith Milestones
  • Campus Ministry/Young Adults
  • Adult Learning 

Salary

Base - $40K, plus health and professional benefits.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree required.  Rostered Deacon and/or degree in education or religious studies preferred, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience with program development and management in an educational environment, or equivalent setting.
  • Embrace ELCA doctrine and theology and fully participate in the life of the congregation.
  • Must possess entrepreneurial spirit, and be self-motivated and adept at building bridges in the congregation and community.
  • Must be willing to work a flexible schedule as required.

Accountability

  • Receives work direction from: Pastor , Education Ministry Team
  • Provides work direction to: Administrator
  • Schedule/ benefits: 40+ hours per week 12 months per year, with benefits. 

Responsibilities

  • Work with the Education Ministry Team to develop and maintain a multi spectrum approach to Faith Formation for all ages. Examples include but are not limited to family baptismal instruction, Learning Hour, youth groups, bible studies, support groups, spiritual direction, and small interest groups.
  • Facilitate community engagement through educational opportunities that connect St. John’s to the surrounding neighborhood. 
  • Identify, recruit, mentor and train lay leaders of the congregation to serve as teachers, mentors, overseers, and peer leaders in their various groups. 
  • Collaborate with the pastoral staff to lead Confirmation ministry, including the establishment of a mentor program to connect Confirmation students with adult members of the congregation.
  • Plan, organize and attend/lead children/youth groups, retreats, Synod and National Youth Gatherings.
  • Train and direct youth for participating in worship.  Examples include but are not limited to acolytes, readers, and drama presentations.
  • Maintain connections with children, youth and families through a variety of means/venues, and communicate with the congregation on all faith and learning opportunities.
  • Work with the Atlanta-area campus ministry programs, in collaboration with the pastor at Grace House and the leaders of Atlanta University Campus Ministry.
  • Develop specialized ministry opportunities for young adults, including but not limited to:  transitioning from college into adulthood, developing healthy support networks, deepening biblical knowledge and spiritual resources.
  • Develop educational/spiritual outlets and program opportunities for the adults of the congregation.
  • Prepare a schedule of ministry for children, youth, young adult/campus ministry, adult learning, and other groups. 
  • Operate within the church office policies and procedures; maintain regularly scheduled office hours to be accessible to congregants and fellow staff; work independently and with confidence.
