EDUCATIONAL OPPORTUNITIES AT ST. JOHN’S

Check out our monthly calendar for updated Learning opportunities and community events!

Learning is an essential part of nurturing faith, particularly as we share and are challenged by others within the faith community. Here at St. John’s there are unique opportunities to grow in understanding and faith together. Many lay leaders, who also hold varying degrees in religious studies, often teach alongside our pastor. Additionally, immersing ourselves through relationship and making connections with others is another mode of learning and growing together we take seriously. Check out some opportunities below to connect to our Learning Ministry at St. John’s.

Each quarter, the Education Team hosts a lunch a learn where congregation and community members are invited to come enjoy lunch with one another and learn about an important topic. In 2024 and in 2025 we’ve hosted Lunch & Learns on the topics of Having Brave Conversations, Inspiritus: Refugee Services, and The Holy Land in Pictures.

LUNCH & LEARN

Making Connections is a group of Lutheran congregations committed to authentic relationship building and learning from one another across the racial spectrum. Throughout the year intentional gatherings take place to plan events, social outings, and lectures / learning opportunities for discussion.

MAKING CONNECTIONS

The St. John’s Book Club meets monthly (September-May) at Eagle Eye Book Store in Decatur. Each month this group discusses a book and the ways it opened their understanding of themselves, the community, and sometimes faith as well (though not all books are religious in nature). Join them each month to share your own perspective and learn with others.

BOOK CLUB

The Learning Team organizes field trips throughout the community that include author talks, theater presentations, and more. These events are designed to expose members of St. John’s and others about the various topics that are important to our community and widen our horizons of education and understanding of broader topics.
